While you wait
1. Shut off the water
Find the main shut-off valve. In most Portland houses it's in the basement or crawlspace where the water line comes in, in the garage, or near the water heater. Turn it clockwise until it stops. If you can't find it, the meter box at the curb has a valve too, but it usually needs a meter key.
2. If the water heater is leaking
For a gas heater, turn the gas control knob to OFF. For an electric heater, switch off its breaker. Then close the cold water valve on the pipe going into the top of the tank.
3. If you smell gas
Leave the house now. Don't switch lights on or off or use anything that could spark. Once you're outside, call 911 or your gas company's emergency line.
4. Keep clear of electrics
Don't touch outlets, switches or appliances near water. If you can reach your breaker panel without standing in water, switch off the circuits for the wet area.
5. Limit the damage
Move what you can out of the way, catch drips in buckets, open cabinet doors so things dry, and take photos for your insurance.
Is it an emergency?
A faucet is dripping. Should I call?
It can wait for a normal appointment. Call during our hours and we'll book it in.
The water heater is leaking a little from the bottom.
Shut off its gas or power and the cold water valve on top (step 2 above), then call. A tank leaking from the bottom usually needs replacing.
A toilet is overflowing.
Turn the valve on the wall behind the toilet clockwise to stop it filling. Don't flush again until it's been looked at.
